Why the Riviera is perfect territory for clothes moths

The Mediterranean climate is a blessing for exceptional wardrobes — and for what eats them. Clothes moths thrive between 20 and 30 °C with moderate to high humidity: conditions the coast delivers eight months out of twelve, and which heated interiors extend right through winter. Where a harsh continental winter naturally slows breeding cycles, a Monaco dressing room held at 21 °C lets larvae feed without interruption, generation after generation.

Add to this a decisive local factor: the seasonality of residences. A significant share of Côte d'Azur apartments and villas are occupied only a few months or even weeks per year. A wardrobe that sleeps for six months in darkness — no doors opening, no air movement, no inspection — offers moths exactly what they seek: darkness, stillness and an inexhaustible source of keratin. Moths flee light and disturbance; a garment worn and brushed regularly is almost never attacked. A forgotten garment almost always is.

Finally, the density of noble textiles per square metre is unmatched here. Cashmere, vicuña, alpaca, mohair, silk, Oriental rugs, horsehair-stuffed armchairs: a single residence can hold more keratin fibre than an entire building elsewhere. For an insect whose larva eats nothing else, the Riviera is an open table.

Know your enemy: Tineola bisselliella and Tinea pellionella

Two species account for most of the damage we see on our call-outs. The first, Tineola bisselliella, the webbing clothes moth, is a small golden-beige moth of 6 to 8 millimetres with fringed wings; it shuns light and flies little — the moths you see fluttering are usually males, because the females, heavy with eggs, prefer to scurry into the folds and hide. The second, Tinea pellionella, the case-bearing clothes moth, is recognisable by one telltale detail: its larva builds a portable case of silk and nibbled fibres that it carries everywhere, like a sheath, retreating inside it at the slightest threat.

The crucial point most people miss: the adult moth eats nothing. Its mouthparts are atrophied; it lives about a fortnight, just long enough to reproduce. All the damage — every last hole — is the work of the larvae. A female lays 50 to 100 eggs, minuscule at under half a millimetre, deposited directly into the fibres: deep in a fold, under a collar, inside a coat lining. Depending on temperature, the eggs hatch in one to three weeks, and the larvae then feed for anywhere from two months to two years before pupating. That elastic cycle explains the nasty surprises: a garment contaminated in September can look intact at Christmas and be riddled with holes by March.

At heated dressing-room temperatures, expect two to four generations a year. An infestation that starts with a single female in October can therefore mean several hundred larvae by the following spring. Cashmere, wool, silk: why your finest pieces are targeted first

Moth larvae digest keratin, the protein that makes up hair, wool, feathers and fur. And the finer and less processed a fibre, the more digestible it is. Cashmere — goat underdown of 14 to 16 microns — is from this standpoint the perfect food: tender, rich, stripped of the coarsest guard hairs. Vicuña and baby alpaca follow immediately. Merino wool comes next, then the more rustic wools.

Silk is a special case: it is made not of keratin but of fibroin, another animal protein. Larvae consume it less readily, but they will cut through and damage it without hesitation when it is blended with wool, backed with horsehair or simply stained. And this deserves emphasis: moths have a marked weakness for soiled textiles. A trace of perspiration, a drop of perfume, an invisible food residue supplies the moisture and mineral salts a larva needs to round out its diet. A jumper worn just once and then stored for six months is statistically far more likely to be attacked than one cleaned before storage.

Conversely, cotton, linen and synthetic fibres do not nourish larvae. But beware of hasty conclusions: a cotton garment stored against an infested cashmere jumper can be holed "in passing", and wool-synthetic blends are attacked for their wool content. In a wardrobe, you must always think at the scale of the entire cabinet, never the single garment.

Spotting an infestation before it is too late

The signs, in order of appearance. First, the adult moths: small golden lepidopterans that flutter up weakly when you open a wardrobe, or turn up dead on shelves. Their presence signals active breeding, and therefore recent egg-laying. Next, larval traces: silk threads webbed across the knit, small tubes or cases the colour of the attacked garment — the signature of Tinea pellionella — and fine sand-like grains, which are larval droppings tinted the colour of the fibres consumed. Finally, the damage itself: areas where the knit is thinned, as if shaved, then clean holes with irregular edges, often clustered where the fabric folds.

Three simple checking habits to pass on to your household staff. One: inspect first whatever never moves — the back of shelves, the garments at the bottom of piles, the inside of folded sleeves. Two: hold fine knitwear up against the light, because thinning of the knit shows through before an actual hole appears. Three: do not forget furnishing textiles — rugs under furniture, the undersides of wool armchairs, lined curtains, blanket chests. The classic mistake: spraying without a diagnosis

Faced with the first moths, the most common reflex is also the most counterproductive: buying an insecticide aerosol and spraying the wardrobe. The result is threefold, and bad three times over. First, the aerosol kills the visible moths — which, remember, eat nothing and were about to die anyway — but reaches neither the eggs nestled in the fibres nor the larvae sheltered deep in folds and linings. Second, it deposits solvents and active substances onto delicate textiles where they have no business being, with the risk of rings on silk and persistent odours on absorbent fibres like cashmere. Third, it creates a wholly unfounded sense of security: the wardrobe is closed again in the belief it has been treated, and the larvae carry on their work in silence.

Our method starts at the exact opposite end: with the diagnosis. Which species? What extent? Which hotspots? A professional inspection maps the infestation — wardrobes, but also rugs, skirting boards, ventilation grilles, attic spaces where an old bird's nest or animal-fibre insulation can act as a reservoir. The season-closing protocol, step by step

Here is the framework we apply — and audit — in the seasonal residences of the coast. Ideally it runs over two weeks, before the house is closed.

Step 1: sorting and complete cleaning. No garment goes into storage without being cleaned — even worn only once, even visibly spotless. Dry cleaning eliminates eggs and young larvae; washing at 40 °C or above does the same for pieces that tolerate it. It is the least spectacular step and the most decisive: it removes both existing egg-lays and the soiling that attracts future ones.

Step 2: cold for the delicate pieces. For precious textiles that tolerate neither hot washing nor repeated dry cleaning — certain cashmere knits, antique pieces, fur accessories — preventive freezing is the ultimate weapon: the garment, sealed in an airtight plastic bag to prevent condensation, spends a minimum of 72 hours at −18 °C. Eggs, larvae and pupae are destroyed without the slightest chemical residue. The bag is then allowed to return to room temperature before opening, so condensation forms on the plastic and not on the fibre.

Step 3: the airtight container. Full-zip garment bags in thick fabric, rigid gasketed boxes, vacuum bags for pieces that tolerate compression — never for structured jackets or the finest knits, which would crease. The principle is simple: a female moth cannot lay on what she cannot reach. Thin dry-cleaner's plastic covers, on the other hand, should be banned for long-term storage: neither airtight nor breathable, they combine every defect.

Step 4: sanitising the original container. While the garments are protected, the wardrobe itself is treated: meticulous vacuuming of every surface, groove, shelf-peg hole and skirting board — with the vacuum bag removed from the house immediately afterwards — then steam cleaning of corners and backs. Larvae readily pupate away from the garments, in the crevices of the furniture: neglect them and you re-seed the wardrobe upon reopening.

Step 5: controlled dormancy. Humidity held below 55 % — moisture absorbers or a dehumidifier depending on volume — temperature as low as practical, pheromone traps placed at strategic points, and a documented monthly inspection routine for the household team. The wardrobe enters winter storage the way a yacht enters refit: cleaned, protected, monitored.

Pheromone traps: your alarm system, not your treatment

A pheromone trap releases a synthetic copy of the sex hormone emitted by the female. Males are drawn in and stick to the glue board. Used properly, it is a remarkable tool — provided you understand what it does and what it does not do.

What it does: detect. A trap that stays empty for months confirms the dressing room is healthy. Three captures in a week signal active breeding somewhere in the room, often before any visible damage. By comparing counts across several traps, you can even triangulate the hotspot. That is exactly how we use them in our monitoring plans: as a network of detectors, read and dated at every visit.

What it does not do: eradicate. The trap captures only adult males; it reaches neither females, nor eggs, nor larvae — that is, neither the egg-laying under way nor the damage under way. Treating a pheromone trap as a treatment is one of the most frequent mistakes we encounter; it is a thermometer, not a remedy. In practice: one to two traps per dressing room, placed at wardrobe height, replaced as directed — the pheromone is exhausted within eight to twelve weeks — and read monthly with the count written down. Any capture triggers an inspection; repeated captures trigger a phone call.

Seasonal residences: coordinating housekeeping, butler and contractor

In a great house, protecting the wardrobe is not a task but a chain of responsibility. Our experience of the coast's private properties has taught us that a protocol is only as good as the clarity of its division of labour. Here is the split that works.

To the housekeeper or housekeeping team: the textile calendar. Rotating and brushing worn pieces, weekly visual checks of wardrobes in season, execution of the closing protocol — sorting, dispatch to the dry cleaner, bagging — and monthly off-season reading of the pheromone traps with written records: date, location, number of captures. That register, whether a simple sheet or a shared app, is the backbone of the whole system: it turns impressions into data.

A cedar block sanded regularly — the oil evaporates within months — is a pleasant complement in a healthy wardrobe; it will do nothing against an established infestation. As for the mothballs of old, they no longer belong in a home: toxic to occupants, stubbornly odorous, they belong to the past.
