Bed bugs in restaurants: the banquette blind spot
Guests arriving from hotels, bags on the floor: restaurant banquettes can harbour bed bugs. How to prevent and treat them discreetly.

When people think of bed bugs, they think of hotel rooms. Yet a restaurant banquette combines several favourable conditions: guests seated for two or three hours, seams, buttoned upholstery and wooden frames full of crevices, and diners who often arrive straight from their hotel, bag or suitcase in hand. It happens less often than in hotels, but it does happen, and it is almost always discovered too late. In Monaco and on the Riviera, where fine-dining restaurants welcome an international clientele all year round, it is better to know this scenario before a guest discovers it for you.
How bed bugs reach your banquettes
The bed bug (Cimex lectularius) neither jumps nor flies: it travels. It slips into a bag, a coat or a suitcase, then climbs off wherever the luggage is put down. In a restaurant, the entry routes are always the same:
- a bag placed on the banquette, against the seam of the backrest;
- luggage set down on the floor, at the foot of the banquette frame;
- the cloakroom, where coats and bags touch;
- second-hand or reupholstered furniture, installed without inspection;
- more rarely, staff members' personal belongings.
Once settled, a bed bug can wait: an adult survives several months without feeding. Attracted by warmth and carbon dioxide, it can bite in the evening, when guests sit for a long time in a softly lit dining room. The reverse route also exists: a guest may leave with bed bugs in a bag and drop them off at home or in a hotel room.
Signs to look for
- Small black stains, like dots of ink, in seams, around upholstery buttons and along the frame.
- Translucent, amber-coloured shed skins.
- Flat brown insects the size of an apple pip (5 to 7 mm); juveniles are smaller and paler.
- White eggs about 1 mm long in cracks in the wood.
- A guest reporting bites in clusters or lines, on the arms or ankles.
A bite alone proves nothing: reactions vary widely from one person to another. Only spotting the insect or its traces allows a firm conclusion, hence the value of identification by a professional.
Discreet prevention, built into service
- Offer a bag stool at every table: it is an elegant gesture that keeps bags off the banquettes and the floor.
- Add an inspection to the closing clean once a week: torch, seams, buttons, underside of the seats.
- Vacuum the seams with a flat nozzle and dispose of the contents in a sealed bag.
- Fill the gaps between the banquette and the wall or floor.
- Inspect all second-hand or reupholstered furniture before it is installed.
If a guest reports a bite or an insect
- Stay calm and do not deny it: thank the guest and offer another table.
- Keep the insect if possible, on adhesive tape or in a sealed bag.
- Discreetly close off the area concerned until the diagnosis.
- Do not spray any insecticide: it is unsuited to a food area, and bed bugs scatter.
- Call a professional the same day.
How MPS treats an infested banquette
In the event of an active infestation, our 24/7 on-call service is triggered after a first phone call, and we call you back within 6 hours, 7 days a week. The free audit includes a visual inspection of the dining room, banquettes, cloakroom and neighbouring areas, identification of the species and an assessment of the true extent of the infestation.
The action plan is then built around your business: the intervention takes place at times that protect your service, for example after the last service or on your weekly closing day, and the team can arrive without any distinctive signs. Treatment is graduated, mechanical first, then targeted chemical treatment if necessary, with approved biocidal products and HACCP-compatible protocols, carried out by Certibiocide-certified technicians. As eggs resist many treatments, a follow-up check is needed once they may have hatched.
The report signed electronically, with photos, and the treatment certificate are available in your client area, useful for a hygiene audit or for your insurer. To find out more, see our page on bed bugs, our support for restaurants and our discreet hotel protocol.

- What should I do if a guest reports a bite at the table?
- Stay calm, offer another table, keep the insect if possible and do not spray anything. Then call +377 37 70 70 02: for an active infestation, the 24/7 on-call service is triggered after this first call.
- Is the treatment compatible with a restaurant dining room?
- Yes. Protocols are HACCP-compatible, and approved biocidal products are applied by Certibiocide-certified technicians, at times that protect your service.
