Mouse problem in Monaco: what to do urgently

Hearing nocturnal scratching? Finding small black droppings (2-3 mm)? Emergency mouse guide Monaco: identify, secure, call a Certibiocide pro.

Mouse problem in Monaco: what to do urgently

Do you suspect a mouse in your home in Monaco? Unlike rats, the house mouse (Mus musculus) is small (6-9 cm excluding tail), discreet and often alone at first. But a female produces 5-6 litters per year (5-7 pups each): without intervention, a couple = 60+ individuals in 12 months. Here is the emergency procedure to follow the first 48 hours.

Step 1 · Confirm it is indeed a mouse

Distinctive clues mouse vs rat: - Droppings: 2-3 mm black, grain of rice shape (rat = 12-18 mm, larger) - Nocturnal noises: small sharp scratching, often in ceilings, partitions or skirting boards (rat = heavier, slower) - Grease marks: small brownish marks along skirting boards - Gnawed holes: diameter 6-10 mm (rat = 20-40 mm) - Strong ammoniacal odour concentrated in one point (urine nest)

If you see a rodent: mouse = ~7 cm body with large round head and large ears; rat = ~20 cm body, longer and more muscular.

Step 2 · Secure within 24h

  • Store all food in airtight glass or hard plastic containers (cardboard and paper bags are punctured in 1 night)
  • Empty bins every evening, bin with tight lid
  • Do not leave pet kibble/bowls on the floor at night
  • Plug visible holes with steel wool packed in then sealed with mastic — mice cannot pierce steel wool
  • DO NOT use poison bought at supermarket (untargeted rat poison = risk of household cat/dog poisoning and rotting corpses in partitions)

Step 3 · Call a professional

An isolated mouse can be trapped by an individual with 3-4 mechanical traps (Victor type) baited with peanut butter or nutella. But from 2 individuals reported or signs present in several rooms, the infestation exceeds the DIY threshold.

Call a Certibiocide professional if: - Noises in several areas of the home or building - Droppings found in 2+ distinct points - Sighting of a pup (=active nest less than 5 metres away) - Restaurant, collective kitchen, child's room, medical office (professional intervention obligation) - Condominium with stairwells or waste chutes concerned

Our Monaco mouse protocol

  1. Free on-site diagnosis in 45-60 minutes: entry point inspection, passage tunnel identification, dropping count, infestation level evaluation
  2. Treatment in 3 simultaneous axes:
  3. - Mechanical trapping in sensitive areas (kitchens, bedrooms) — no residual biocide
  4. - Targeted rodenticides in closed boxes inaccessible to children/animals, only in technical areas (crawl space, cellar, waste room)
  5. - Sealing systematic of identified entry points (mastic + steel mesh)
  6. Control returns at D+7 and D+21: trap check, new dropping count, treatment adjustment
  7. Written certificate HACCP-compliant if applicable

Special cases Monaco

  • Restaurants: intervention outside service hours (11pm-7am), no residual biocide in food areas, mandatory HACCP certificate
  • Condominiums: to see with the syndic — mice in stairwells or common areas = running syndic charge
  • Riviera villas: often linked to neglected openings (telecom cable hole, cellar ventilation) — systematic preventive sealing
  • Yachts: discreet dock intervention, biocides compatible with Monegasque territorial waters

How long to eradicate?

  • Isolated mouse (1 point detected): 7-14 days with 2 control returns
  • Moderate infestation (droppings 2-3 points): 3-4 weeks
  • Advanced infestation (droppings 5+ points, multiple rooms): 4-8 weeks + recommended annual preventive treatment

Frequently asked questions

How to quickly differentiate mouse and rat?
Size: mouse 6-9 cm (excl. tail) vs rat 15-25 cm. Droppings: mouse 2-3 mm (rice grain) vs rat 12-18 mm (bean). Holes: mouse 6-10 mm vs rat 20-40 mm. In case of doubt, photo sent to MPS and free 5-minute diagnosis.
Is it dangerous to have mice at home?
Yes, mainly for hygiene: urine and droppings contaminate surfaces (E. coli, Salmonella bacteria, Hantavirus rarely in Europe). Mice also gnaw electrical cables (fire risk) and papers/documents. They reproduce very fast: rapid intervention essential.
Are supermarket mouse traps enough?
For 1 isolated mouse, yes — 3-4 Victor mechanical traps baited with peanut butter work. Beyond 2 individuals or signs in multiple rooms, no: the infestation exceeds what an individual can manage, and untargeted rat poison granules are dangerous for pets/children.
How long between call and intervention in Monaco?
In Monaco and Alpes-Maritimes, average 24-48h for a non-urgent case, 2-4h in verified emergency (restaurant, day-care, children/pets presence). 24/7 on-call in peak season (September-November).
Can mice come up through pipes?
Rarely — the mouse is not a swimmer (unlike the brown rat). Classic entry points: badly sealed electrical/telecom cable hole, cellar/crawl space ventilation without grille, degraded window joint, unclosed pet door at night.
Do you use products safe for pets?
Yes. Our rodenticides are exclusively in secured bait stations, opened by key, with baits in fixed form (blocks), placed in areas inaccessible to animals (cellar, ducts, exterior). No loose granules on the floor. Biocide-free alternative (mechanical trapping) available on request.
