Clinging to the western heights of the Principality, the Jardin Exotique district is staggered along a limestone cliffside, between corniche boulevards and successive retaining walls. Residential buildings from the 1960s to the 1980s, built in tiers to follow the slope, stand alongside a few older villas surrounded by gardens. Succulent and Mediterranean vegetation, abundant on the embankments and dry-stone terraces, forms a green continuum running alongside the façades. This vertical topography, punctuated by rocky crevices, offers commensal wildlife numerous routes and refuges.

Seasonal pressures and sentinel species in Jardin Exotique

The black rat (Rattus rattus), an agile climber, travels along hedges, cables and façades to reach lofts and false ceilings, with more frequent intrusions as soon as the first cold spells arrive. The Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) establishes primary nests in spring beneath roof overhangs, then builds large secondary nests high up at the end of summer. The tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) exploits pooled water in the terraced gardens from May to November. The Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) takes advantage of the irrigated embankments to enter kitchens in columns during the warm season.
