Wasp and hornet peak Monaco August-September: emergency intervention
Wasp and hornet nests reach their maximum size between mid-August and mid-September in Monaco and on the Riviera. Signs, risks and 24/7 discreet intervention.

Between 15 August and 15 September, colonies of common wasps, German wasps and European hornets reach their maximum size on the Côte d'Azur: up to 5,000 individuals per wasp nest, 700 for a hornet nest. The Asian hornet, which arrived later in the season, also enters an aggressive phase at this time. Here is how to recognise an urgent situation and who to call in Monaco.
Why this seasonal peak is riskier
At maturity, nests consume maximum sugar to feed future queens. Workers then spread onto terraces, pools, bins and fruit displays — bringing them into permanent contact with humans. Sting probability is multiplied by 3-4 vs July.
Three high-risk configurations in Monaco: - Restaurant terraces at service hours (bins, sugary glasses, desserts) - Villa pools (wet surfaces, drinks) - Condominium balconies with nests under cornices or in shutter boxes
Signs a nest is nearby
- Continuous coming and going of wasps/hornets between 8am and 6pm toward a fixed point (tree, wall, façade hole, under-roofing)
- Buzzing audible at 2-3 metres from a wall or hole
- Visible papier-mâché "hat" of greyish paper (open nest)
- Asian hornets: 30-80 cm spherical ball at height (high branch, cornice, chimney)
European vs Asian hornet — quick recognition
| Criterion | European | Asian | |-----------|----------|-------| | Size | 25-35 mm | 25-30 mm | | Thorax colour | Brown-orange | Matt black | | Legs | Brown | Yellow tips | | Flight | Silent night | Active daytime | | Typical nest | Cavities (hollow trees, attics) | Aerial spherical ball |
The Asian hornet is a bee predator — its destruction is encouraged by town halls and beekeeping unions.
What to do in an emergency
You are alone facing the nest 1. **Do not attempt destruction yourself**. A disturbed hornet nest releases alarm pheromones that trigger a coordinated attack. Household insecticides are not enough. 2. **Keep children and pets away** within a 5-metre radius. 3. **Close windows, doors, shutters** of the room facing the nest. 4. **Call a Certibiocide-certified professional** — we are on 24/7 call in Monaco: [+377 37 70 70 02](tel:+37737707002).
You are a property manager - Immediate signalling of affected accesses to co-owners - Do not close gates/doors (would create concentration of exposed people) - Intervention borne by the manager (running charge — see our [Monaco co-ownership pest control article](/blog/copropriete-monaco-deratisation-syndic-copropriete-repartition-frais))
Our intervention protocol
- Remote diagnosis in 5 minutes by phone (number of individuals, height, access, presence of children/allergic persons)
- On-site intervention within 2-4 hours in Monaco/Riviera (24/7 during peak season)
- Treatment adapted to nest type (accessible wasp nest = targeted pyrethroid; high Asian hornet nest = 15-metre pole + powder insecticide)
- Nest removal after 24-48h (once all workers are dead) — important, otherwise new queens reuse the structure
- Written certificate provided, home insurance coverage possible on quote

Frequently asked questions
- How long before a hornet nest becomes dangerous?
- A primary nest (April-May) stays moderate 2-3 months. From mid-July the colony explodes; peak maturity falls mid-August to mid-September — that's when the nest contains up to 700 aggressive individuals.
- Is an Asian hornet sting more dangerous?
- The venom is close to that of the European hornet but the attack is often collective. For a non-allergic adult, 1-2 stings remain painful but not serious; beyond 10 stings, medical emergency. Allergic persons: immediate SAMU intervention (15).
- Can I destroy a small nest myself?
- No for an active nest. Even a small wasp nest (30 individuals) triggers a coordinated defence. Household insecticide bombs don't penetrate the heart of the nest — you risk multiple stings for a partial result. Pro cost in Monaco: fixed fee, guaranteed result.
- How long between call and intervention in peak season?
- Average 2-4 hours in Monaco/Riviera during August-September. Verified emergency (children, allergic person, commercial activity stopped): we prioritise within 60-90 minutes. 24/7 on-call active from 15 August to 15 September.
- Do you remove the nest after destruction?
- Yes, systematically 24-48h after treatment (time for all workers to die). Removal is important: a non-removed nest can be recolonised by new queens the following year. Removal included in our standard package.
- Does home insurance cover the destruction?
- Under certain conditions yes, particularly for European hornets qualified as pests threatening people. We provide a detailed certificate with Certibiocide number, nest description, treatment method — accepted by most insurers (MMA, MAIF, AXA, Allianz).
