Around the Principality's historic harbour basin, the Port Hercule area combines quays, breakwaters and technical platforms with a mixed frontage of residential buildings and ground floors given over to restaurants, bars and provisioning suppliers. Large-scale yachting activity involves daily deliveries, food storage and waste management on the quays, while the events calendar brings recurring temporary installations. The harbour structures, rock armour and technical chambers provide permanent shelter in the immediate vicinity of an abundant food resource.

Seasonal pressures and sentinel species at Port Hercule

The brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) is the dominant species on the site, nesting in the rock armour and quayside networks then climbing mooring lines and gangways towards provisioning areas, all year round and more so in winter. The yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) exploits waste and terraces, with pressure peaking from March to July. The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) thrives in the kitchens of quayside establishments, where warmth allows several generations a year. The American cockroach (Periplaneta americana), tied to warm, humid networks, appears in the technical chambers and harbour washrooms at the height of summer.
