Backed against the red Estérel massif, Théoule-sur-Mer spreads its villas and small apartment blocks between porphyry rock and pine woods descending towards the coves. The housing stock consists of homes perched on the cliffside, cantilevered terraces and residences with dry gardens planted with umbrella pines and mimosas. Dry-stone walls, ventilated crawl spaces and tiled roofs provide numerous shelters. The steep slope, buried pipework following the relief and the immediate proximity of the forest cover expose the buildings to wildlife coming directly from the massif.

Seasonal pressures and sentinel species in Théoule-sur-Mer

The pine processionary caterpillar (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) weaves its silken nests in the pine woods from late autumn to the end of winter, with a marked stinging risk during the spring descent processions. The black rat (Rattus rattus), a skilled climber, exploits cliff crevices, roof timbers and trees to reach attics. The yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) nests on roofs and cornices from spring onwards, aggressively defending its brood. Wasps (Vespula spp.) proliferate in summer around shaded terraces and garden compost.
