The heart of Valberg blends traditional timber-frame chalets, club residences from the resort's development years and small seasonal apartment blocks. High-altitude restaurants, ski-front shops and tourist accommodation cluster around the slope departures, with food stores, cellars and plant rooms often partly below ground. Long closure periods between seasons, winter storage of supplies in silos and sacks, and the unheated lofts of chalets create shelters sought out by wildlife. Softwood roof frames and cladding timber also expose structures to wood-boring insects.

Seasonal pressures and sentinel species in Valberg

The wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) and the black rat (Rattus rattus) move into stores and storage sacks as the first cold arrives, peaking from October to March. The carpenter ant (Camponotus sp.) tunnels through galleries and moisture-softened chalet timber, especially in spring when colonies swarm. The bed bug (Cimex lectularius), finally, exploits the high turnover of seasonal rentals to spread from bedding to bedding throughout the winter, when tourist occupancy is at its highest.
