Vence preserves a medieval old town enclosed by ramparts, with cobbled lanes, old stone houses and centuries-old timber frames. On the outskirts, Provençal farmhouses, bastides and villas step up cultivated dry-stone terraces, amid olive groves and terraced gardens. The kitchens of traditional restaurants, cool cellars and dry-stone walls of the hillsides make up an environment where structural timber, moisture and foodstuffs offer pests both harbourage and resources. The attics, floors and beams of the old buildings are particularly exposed to wood-boring insects.

Seasonal pressures and sentinel species in Vence

Wood-boring insects, including the common furniture beetle (Anobium punctatum) and the house longhorn beetle (Hylotrupes bajulus), silently degrade the frames, beams and floors of old buildings, with increased flight activity in the warm season. The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) settles year-round in the kitchens of traditional restaurants, where warmth and humidity favour its breeding. The house mouse (Mus musculus) exploits the dry-stone walls and terraces, climbing towards dwellings and stores in autumn. Subterranean termites (Reticulitermes sp.) can also threaten buried timber and structures in contact with the ground.
